How Often Should You Water New Sod in Calgary? A Complete 2026 Guide
You just had fresh sod delivered or installed, your yard finally looks green again, and now comes the most important part:
Keeping it that way.
Watering is arguably the single most important thing you can do during the first few weeks after installing new sod. Fresh sod has a very shallow root system when it arrives at your home. Until those roots begin growing into the soil underneath, the grass depends heavily on you for moisture.
And in Calgary, watering new sod isn't always as simple as following the same schedule every day.
Our dry air, hot summer afternoons, wind, sudden temperature changes and good old Calgary weather can all affect how quickly a freshly installed lawn dries out.

The Short Answer: How Often Should New Sod Be Watered?
For most newly installed sod in Calgary:
Days 1–10: Water approximately 90 Minutes consecutively, per section, once per day.
During hot, sunny or particularly dry weather: You may need to water twice per day.
Days 10–21: Begin transitioning toward watering approximately every other day, looking to begin mowing once the roots start to take. (Read about Mowing Tips for Establishment Here)
After approximately 3 weeks: Once the sod has established roots, begin transitioning toward a normal lawn-watering routine.
The City of Calgary provides similar guidance for establishing new sod: approximately once per day for the first 10 days, increasing to twice daily during hot and sunny conditions, followed by watering every other day from approximately days 10–21.
But there's an important point:
The calendar is only a guide. Your lawn should ultimately tell you when it needs water.
Temperature, sun exposure, wind, soil type, drainage and sprinkler coverage can dramatically change how quickly one Calgary yard dries compared with another.
Green is Good - Yellow means its Thirsty, White means it has dried past the point of recovery.
The First Watering Is the Most Important
Don't install an entire lawn and then think about watering it later that evening.
Start watering as soon as possible.
Freshly harvested sod has been separated from the soil where its roots were growing. Once it has been laid, you want moisture moving through the sod and into the prepared soil underneath.
If you're installing a large yard yourself, you can even begin watering completed sections while installation continues elsewhere.
For that initial watering, the goal isn't just to make the grass blades wet.
You want to thoroughly wet:
The sod itself
The root layer underneath the sod
The upper layer of your prepared soil
The soil underneath should feel moist—not dusty and dry—but your lawn shouldn't look like a pond either.
Days 1–10: Keep Your New Sod Consistently Moist
The first 7–10 days are the most vulnerable period for your new lawn.
At this stage, the sod hasn't developed enough roots into the soil below to efficiently find its own moisture.
For most Calgary lawns, one thorough watering per day is a good starting point.
During particularly hot, sunny or windy weather, the lawn may require another watering later in the day.
The City of Calgary's current new-landscape guide recommends watering new sod once daily during the first 10 days, or twice daily when conditions are hot and sunny.
How long should I run my sprinkler?
The Sodfather suggests approximately 60-90 minutes during days 0–10 as a general guideline.
However, sprinkler systems are not created equal.
One sprinkler might put down twice as much water as another in 20 minutes.
That's why we prefer teaching homeowners to check the lawn rather than blindly trust the clock.
Carefully lift the corner of a piece of sod.
The underside should be moist, and the soil immediately underneath should also be damp.
If the soil underneath is still dry, you're not watering deeply enough.
Days 10–21: Start Encouraging Deeper Roots
Once your sod begins establishing itself, your watering strategy changes.
Rather than constantly keeping the very surface wet, we want the roots to begin growing downward into the soil in search of moisture.
Around days 10–21, you can usually begin watering less frequently but more deeply.
A good starting point is approximately:
Every other day
The City of Calgary recommends approximately 30 minutes per watering during this stage, although the actual time needed will depend on your sprinkler output and property.
This transition is important.
Keeping an established lawn constantly saturated isn't better for it. Over time, deeper and less frequent watering helps encourage a stronger root system.
How Do You Know If New Sod Is Actually Rooting?
Here's one of the easiest tests.
After roughly 10–14 days, gently grab a corner or edge of the sod and try lifting it.
Don't rip it up.
Just apply a little upward pressure.
If the piece lifts easily like a carpet, the roots haven't established very far yet.
If you begin feeling resistance, that's good news.
Your sod is starting to root into the soil underneath.
As rooting becomes stronger, you can gradually transition away from your establishment watering schedule.
What Does Underwatered Sod Look Like?
Fresh sod can dry surprisingly quickly during Calgary's summer weather.
Watch for:

Grass losing its rich green colour

A dull, grey-green or bluish appearance

Sod edges beginning to curl or shrink

Gaps beginning to appear between pieces

Dry soil underneath the sod

Grass blades staying flattened after being walked on

The Sodfather specifically lists sod edges pulling apart or separating as a visual sign that new sod may need more water.
Don't wait until the entire lawn turns brown before adjusting your watering.
Can You Overwater New Sod?
Absolutely.
One of the biggest misconceptions about new sod is:
If water is good, more water must be better.
It isn't.
Your new sod needs moisture, but it also needs oxygen.
Constantly saturated soil can create problems of its own.
Signs that you may be applying too much water include:

Standing or pooling water

Extremely muddy soil

Water running onto sidewalks and driveways

A lawn that stays soaking wet for long periods

A musty smell
The City of Calgary also identifies puddling, mushy soil, and musty odours as potential indications of overwatering.
Your goal is moist soil, not swampy soil.
Calgary Weather Changes Everything
This is one of the reasons we don't love rigid watering instructions.
A new lawn installed during a cool 17°C cloudy week does not have the same watering requirements as sod installed during a sunny 30°C stretch.
Neither does a shaded backyard compared with a south-facing front lawn baking in afternoon sun.
Pay particular attention to:
Hot weather
Hot temperatures increase evaporation and can dry new sod quickly.
Check the soil more frequently and add a second watering during the establishment period when necessary.
Wind
Calgary wind can remove moisture from a lawn surprisingly fast.
Even when temperatures aren't extreme, a windy day can dry exposed areas considerably faster.
Full sun
South- and west-facing areas generally dry more quickly than shaded sections.
Don't assume every part of the yard requires exactly the same amount of water.
Rain
If Mother Nature already thoroughly watered the lawn for you, you don't need to automatically run your sprinkler just because your schedule says so.
Check the soil.
Rainfall counts.
What Time of Day Should You Water New Sod?
Morning is generally best.
Watering earlier in the day allows moisture to penetrate the soil before the hottest part of the afternoon while reducing unnecessary evaporation.
The City of Calgary also recommends early-morning watering for newly developing lawns and advises against watering new sod late at night.
During exceptionally hot establishment periods, a second watering may occasionally be necessary.
The key is watching moisture levels rather than repeatedly soaking an already-wet lawn.
What About Calgary's New 2026 Watering Schedule?
This is especially important this year.
Calgary's new Lawn and Landscape Watering Schedule came into effect April 29, 2026.
For established lawns using sprinklers or automatic irrigation:
Even-numbered addresses: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
Odd-numbered addresses: Wednesday, Friday and Sunday
Regular scheduled sprinkler watering is permitted during designated hours, primarily during the cooler overnight, morning and evening periods.
But what about brand-new sod?
Here's the important part:
New sod can be watered outside the regular schedule during its 21-day establishment period.
The City specifically provides an establishment exemption for new sod for 21 days.
That's important because reducing watering to three days per week immediately after installation could make it extremely difficult for fresh sod to establish during warm Calgary weather.
After approximately 21 days, once your new lawn has established, you should transition to Calgary's regular watering schedule.
Always check the City of Calgary's current requirements in case temporary outdoor water restrictions are introduced, as temporary restrictions can override the regular watering schedule.
Don't Forget Your Sprinkler Coverage
Here's something we see all the time.
A homeowner says:
“I've been watering it every day!”
But one corner of the yard is turning brown.
The problem isn't necessarily watering frequency.
It's coverage.
Sprinklers don't always distribute water perfectly evenly.
Pay close attention to:

Corners
-
Edges along sidewalks
-
Areas beside fences
-
Narrow side yards
-
Areas behind trees or landscaping
-
Sections between two sprinkler patterns
Edges are especially prone to drying because they're exposed to additional air and heat from nearby concrete.
Move your sprinkler when necessary and make sure you're actually reaching the entire lawn.
Should You Water Sod Sitting on a Pallet?
Ideally, sod should be installed as soon as possible after delivery.
Fresh sod is a living, perishable product.
Once stacked on a pallet, especially during hot weather, the rolls can generate considerable heat internally.
Spraying the outside of a pallet with water is not a substitute for installing it promptly.
Plan your project so your soil preparation is finished before your fresh sod arrives.
Get it laid.
Then get it watered.
When Can You Mow New Sod?
Don't rush this part.
You want your sod to begin rooting before repeatedly walking a heavy lawn mower across it.
A good indicator is the same rooting test we discussed earlier.
Gently try lifting an edge.
Once the sod has established enough roots that it resists being lifted, you can begin considering the first mow.
Make sure the ground isn't soaking wet when you mow, and avoid removing too much grass height at once.
When Should You Apply Fertilizer?
Fresh sod benefits from having the nutrients required to establish a healthy root system.

Days 10–21
Approximately every other day.
Begin watering more deeply while allowing some time between watering.
Check that roots are beginning to attach to the soil.
Day 21+
Begin transitioning toward normal established-lawn watering and follow Calgary's current Lawn and Landscape Watering Schedule.
The Finger Test Beats the Clock

Don't stop watering your lawn simply because the clock says 30 minutes have passed.
Walk outside.
Look at it.
Feel the soil.
Lift an edge during the early establishment period.
Your lawn will tell you far more than a timer will.
Two Calgary homes on the same street can have completely different watering requirements because of soil, shade, slope, wind, sprinkler type and sun exposure.
The objective isn't to follow a timer perfectly.
The objective is to keep your new sod properly hydrated while it develops a strong root system.
